Background Information:
  • Gran’s an orphan living in the outskirts of the Phantagrande Skydom, and his only wish is going to the rumored Island of the Astrals, Estalucia, to go see his father after receiving a letter from him asking him to do so.
  • He meets Lyria, a girl who’s running away from the Erste Empire after seeing one of their airships explode in the sky, and decides to lead her to safety. It blows up in his face as he dies protecting her, but she links her life to his, resurrecting him.
  • They bring about the fall of the Erste Empire after some time, allowing the Phantagrande Skydom breathe the air of freedom once more.
  • He’s roped into the fight between Idelva and Rhem, two kingdoms fighting for power in the Nahelgrande Skydom after he crosses over the Grim Basin.
  • He ends up uncovering the Oarylegrande Skydom’s plot to unify the entire Sky Realm under one banner (by destroying Nahelgrande from the inside) and ends up putting a stop to the destruction of Nahelgrande.
  • They fall into an area that borders the deepest parts of the sky, called the Edgelands, and try to find the best way back up into the mainland. There, the entire crew finds out about Lyria and Vyrn’s history, and it shakes them.
  • Gran and crew eventually make it back to the mainland, but are then told by Gran’s father’s friend that Gran has become a Singularity, and his choices will affect the entire world as they know it. Despite everything that he could bring, he solidifies his choice in continuing to travel with his crew, knowing it may bring death and destruction.
  • They eventually make it into Oarylegrande, and try to talk the True King out of his plans to unite the skydoms, but fail to do so. After the meeting, they meet up with the Blue Liberation Front, a secret group that want to liberate Oarlyegrande from the True King’s tyrannical rule.
  • The crew start to infiltrate each of Oarlyegrande’s 6 supporting islands, each island dedicated to a certain aspect of society. They infiltrate the island that supports the education sector, and their memories are warped into believing that they have always been students, up until the point that they liberate the island.
  • The crew then infiltrates the second island, the island dedicated to pure entertainment, and find out more information about Lejos, the leader of the Blue Liberation Front. His true identity was a girl named Selka, whose confrontation with her mother, Amar, lead to the freedom of the island.

Personality: Gran is fairly unassuming, looking like a run of the mill child in a place such as Zinkenstill. But he’s always got a smile on his face, and his body gives off the aura of a hard worker, unwilling to give up just because a task seems to be too hard. He strives to do the best he can when asked to help, making sure the job is done right, even if it means doing things over and over again just to be sure it’s done right. It pays off in the end, as he tends to always be content receiving smiles instead of money.

Despite his eyes being filled with almost an unending curiosity, they hide a deep, almost abyssal loneliness due to being abandoned by his father when he was young. If mentioned, he’ll act as if it were never there. The topic of parents tends to bring out this side of Gran, but more often than not, he will still hope he can see his father once more. The smile was once a defense mechanism to avoid being asked such questions, but ever since he’s started his travels with Lyria and the Grandcypher, the smile’s become more and more genuine as time goes on.

He’s also honest to a fault, unable to tell others a lie because he believes it’ll hurt them more than it hurt him. But it also allows him to be unafraid of letting others know that he cares for them deeply, and will do anything for them. This all is indicative of a kind heart, and one who’s always open to being a shoulder to cry on. After all, he’s never shy to express his emotions, why should he not let others do the same?

At first, Gran has a tendency to go along with others, due to being so alone, but eventually grows out of that as he travels through the Sky Realm. Whenever he does take up a leadership position, such as being captain of the Grandcypher crew, he stands up straighter and starts to have a commandeering presence. He knows how to lead, and he will do it well. Gran’s voice even deepens just a smidge when in captain mode, knowing that he holds multiple lives in his hands and never plans to lose anyone due to a careless order or act. It’s this side of him that earns the respect of his crew members. He can be reckless if angered, but normally he will err on the side of caution.

Abilities & Inventory:

Singularity: In layman’s terms, he has the ability to change fate if he so chooses to. It’s a passive ability that Gran doesn’t need to be aware he’s using.

Fighter: He’s not the best fighter, given that a lot of his swordplay is self taught and rough around the edges, but it’s known that he adapts fairly quickly, and doesn’t give up no matter what. He’s also got some experience in polearms, but isn’t the best in that.

Lumberjack: Here’s that skillset.

Nerfs: Being the focus of Songerein sounds waaay too powerful so nerf as you please.

Inventory: Just a sword and the lumberjack outfit!

Suitability & Plans: Gran’s a dreamer, with his dream being the driving force of becoming an adventurer (skyfarer in canon), aside from trying to help Lyria live a peaceful life. Gran still feels like he could be much more, wanting to learn as much as he can in order to live the best life he possibly could. He’s always open to meeting new people and having new experiences, as he is very much aware of his own mortality (having almost fallen to his death several times). However, he is very much a closed off person when it relates to his own history, so I want him to be able to meet people who can openly challenge that, as well as explore a way to cope with the abandonment that his father put him through, as he’s very much used to the notion of ignoring his feelings until it bites him back.

About
Spoilers for the entire main game’s story up to chapter 130 ahead. Will add the next story updates eventually.

Gran lives a normal life on Zinkenstill, a remote island in the Phantagrande Skydom, waiting for the day that he’ll be allowed to leave the island in order to search for Estalucia, a fabled island where his father said he was on. After an airship explodes over the skies of Zinkenstill, Gran decides to investigate. He soon meets with a girl named Lyria, who explains that she’s escaped the airship, and only desires freedom. He’s soon attacked by Pommern of the Erste Empire, whose hellbent on taking back Lyria back to the Empire, and decides to run from the fight with Lyria in tow. They are soon cornered, and Gran takes an attack from a Hydra, trying to protect Lyria from certain death. This invokes a power within Lyria, and with a determination to return the favor, she revives Gran with the power of a life link. They eventually defeat Pommern, and meet up with Lyria’s guardian, Katalina. They end up on the run, thanks to Rackam and his ship, the Grandcypher. This target on their backs lasts them a few months until Gran and his crew are able to free some islands from the Empire’s control, and are able to defeat them for the time being.

After the defeat of the Erste Empire, the royal family of the Erste Kingdom regained their power. The crew meets them for the first time, asking them for information on the next Sky Map piece— a piece of the Sky Realm’s main map, and the only clue that can lead them to Gran’s father. They are told multiple clues, such as the islands where they may be, and how Sky Map pieces are only found on islands that have a pact with a primal beast, and Gran and his crew start looking. However, the entire crew is separated at each turn, and on each new island. Gran refuses to lose his head throughout it all, even while Lyria and Vyrn, the ones constantly at his side, are terrified. They manage to gather all the Sky Map pieces for the Phantagrande Skydom, only to be thrown into a battle with the primal beast that protects the very border between the skydoms.

They eventually cross into the Nahelgrande Skydom after a trek through the Grim Basin, the ‘wall’ between the Phantagrande and Nahelgrande skydoms. There, Gran and crew are pulled into the war between Nahelgrande’s kingdoms of Idelva and Rhem, and start tuggging at the underlying strings that are being pulled by the True King, the ruler of the neighboring Oarlyegrande skydom. By using a power-hungry man named Gilbert, the power of the Otherworld, and a weapon flying high in the sky known as the Great Wall, the True King manipulated the truth and pulled all the strings in order to destroy Nahelgrande in a plot to unify the Sky Realm under one banner. The True King failed to see the horrors in his crimes of letting Gilbert fall into madness and using lives to fuel the Grand Wall, and simply retreated back to Istavion Kingdom in the Oarlyegrande Skydom, and leaving the crew to die underneath the power of the Great Wall. The plot was foiled by the crew’s deed of destroying the Wall, which Gilbert and one of the True King’s loyal retainers, the Red Knight, sacrificed their lives for. This win was not without losses, though, as the Grandcypher lost its ability to fly, and started to fall towards the bottom of the skies.

Once they wake up, Gran and his crew find themselves in the Edgelands, a place that borders the bottom of the skies, the Crimson Horizon. There, they are given a choice by a girl named Shitori: either take their only path to escape or help her rescue a girl named Mika after hearing she was kidnapped. Gran, refusing to leave without helping Shitori, ends up meeting up with old enemies Loki and Fenrir, Astrals who wants to use Mika’s power for his own crimes. However, it’s revealed that Mika— or rather, her full name of Mikaboshi, is also an Astral, only amnesiac due to falling from the skies herself with Shitori, who is revealed to be her daughter. When saving Mikaboshi as she regains her memories, Gran finally starts getting hints about his own existence through her. She also reveals how Lyria and Vyrn, known as the Girl in Blue and the Red Dragon to the Astrals, are two halves of a whole who can bring destruction to their entire world, as it is destiny.

While Gran doesn’t show it, hearing that hurts him, but declares that he will fight against destiny, no matter what it may bring. But even with all that, they fail to save Mikaboshi, and Gran and his crew are soon lifted out of the Edgelands. They end up stranded on Port Breeze Island, the island that started the entire adventure, as the Grandcypher is too damaged to continue flying for the time being. While the Grandcypher is being repaired, Gran meets a man named Walfried, a man who travelled with him. Walfried expresses how Gran’s father would be proud of him, and that sets off alarm bells in Gran and his entire crew.

Walfried then drops a bomb on them: He once travelled with Gran’s father, and explains how he was tasked to take the power of the primal beasts, with Vyrn at his side. This shocks him both him and Vyrn, as Vyrn has always been by Gran’s side, and not his father’s. Vyrn then expresses how he’s always felt like there was a gap in his memories. Gran also learns that his father helped each primal beast, depending on what the primal themselves wanted, and not what he was tasked to do, and Vyrn’s latent powers assisted him with that goal. Near the end of Gran’s father’s journey, they brought back Lyria to Phantagrande, and the rest is history.

Walfried then drops another bomb: while Gran’s father is one whose power was given to him by the gods, he tried everything to stop a singularity, a being whose will bends the entire world towards, from appearing. In a cruel twist of fate, Gran became that very singularity that he was preventing. This truth throws Gran for a loop, unsure how to answer his final question: would he still go to Estalucia, knowing that his father would possibly be against his entire existence. It took him a moment to reply, but his reply stayed the same: “I want to travel with everyone, no matter what destiny may bring. We’ll reach Estalucia no matter what.”

Walfried wasn’t done yet, as Gran’s mother was brought up as well, but there was even less information about her than there was about Gran’s father. All Walfried knew was that Gran’s parents were childhood friends, and that she was a kind, compassionate woman who came from a line of sky god worshippers. Gran tries to direct all this information, but then trouble hits. The crew receives news that golems started breaking into the Erste Kingdom, clearly sent there by a revived Erste Empire, backed by the Istavion Kingdom and the True King. This ruse ends up being a cover up for the True King to release Otherworld solders into the Sky Realm. In the process of stopping the Otherworld soldiers from entering, Lyria is transported to the Otherworld with half his crew, almost completely severing the connection between Gran and her. Despite knowing that Lyria was alive and the inability to do anything, he presses on to find the four Sky Map pieces needed to continue on into the Oarlyegrande skydom. Gran, for all his efforts, starts feeling weak and sluggish, and he soon realizes that because Lyria is far away, he is slowly, but surely, dying.

Gran pushes on regardless of his body’s deteriorating state, as he knows that if he can just find the pieces, he can save Lyria, as her safety was far more important than his. By the time his half of the crew manage to get the third piece, Gran and his crew are surrounded by Otherworlders. The leader, before they launch an attack, told the truth behind Lyria and Vyrn’s power— they are the two main pieces in the war between the Sky and Astral God, two gods that were split from one. The conduit of primal beast, Lyria, allows the Sky God to gain Astral power while the destroyer of primal beasts, Vyrn, allows the Astral God to gain Sky power. Both gods needed a vessel to store that gained power, and once that vessel—Lyria for the Sky God, and Vyrn for the Astral God—were full, they would be devoured by their respective god and erased forever. This truth ties into Gran’s role as Singularity, as he is “the true victim” of the gods— he is the one to decide where the chips will fall, and the Otherworlder claims he will have to make that choice eventually. Even so, Gran doesn’t give in to their demands of revolting against the gods in general, even as his life is near its end due to the lack of Lyria’s life link.

In that space between life and death, his resolve of traveling with Lyria and Vyrn is brought into question once more by a woman and a large, ethereal dragon. Gran finds himself staying resolute in his desires to travel with them, saying that they will defy any fate that is in store for them. The woman finds herself accepting his answer, and pushes him into white. Before his mind fades away completely in the white space, a warm light leads him forward, and bright blue hair soon graces his vision. Lyria again is determined to save Gran from his certain death, and confesses to him that yes, she is deathly terrified of becoming what fate wants her to be. Despite that, she explains that she won’t be afraid if Gran is by her side, and he openly admits that as well. Lyria soon leads him back to his friends, and he wakes up in the real world. Gran and Lyria are united once more, as Lyria uses her own power to protect Gran and her crewmates, and there they confirm that they won’t be afraid of meeting their maker. After the fight, Lyria and Katalina reveal that they came back with a Sky Map piece that was rumored to be lost. The missing Sky Map piece happened to be harboring in Ares, the primal beast Katalina made a pact with. With that, they managed to get the last piece needed to cross into the next skydom, and they head to Oarlyegrande to face the True King at last.

Appearance
height 5’8”
build muscular
hair light brown
eyes brown
first impressions Gran is fairly unassuming, having a simple short hair cut, as well as having a plain looking face. But he’s always got a smile on his face, and his body gives off the aura of a hard worker, unwilling to give up just because a task seems to be too hard. Gran’s soft features, however, indicate a kind heart, and one who’s always open to being a shoulder to cry on. After all, he’s never shy to express his emotions, why should he not let others do the same?

Despite his eyes being filled with almost an unending curiosity, they hide a deep, almost abyssal loneliness due to being (essentially) abandoned by his father when he was young. If mentioned, he’ll act as if it were never there. The smile was once a defense mechanism to avoid being asked such questions, but ever since he’s started his travels with Lyria and the Grandcypher, the smile’s become more and more genuine as time goes on.

Whenever taking a leadership position, he stands up straighter and starts to have a commandeering presence. He knows how to lead, and he will do it well. Gran’s voice even deepens just a smidge when in captain mode, knowing that he holds multiple lives in his hands and never plans to lose anyone due to a careless order or act. It’s this side of him that earns the respect of his crew members.

features Gran’s a plain looking boy, but underneath the baggy hoodie and armor hides a toned body with multiple scars from the countless fights he’s been in. His relic buster outfit shows off his figure much more than his hoodie does, but doesn’t wear it often due to how tight he thinks it feels.

His hair grows a lot faster than one thinks, however. That’s what leads to what Lyria calls “floofy hair”. Gran’s hair is very soft to the touch, and due to the sheer volume of it, he tries to keep it short.

Powers
Singularity
This ‘ability’ isn’t so much that as it is a premonition that most fear in the Sky Realm. In essence, it is the ability to change the world as Gran sees fit, as long as he has he will to change it. It is so powerful in fact, that most say it’s the ability to change the world’s course at the snap of one’s fingers, either leading it to prosperity or ruin. Of course, Gran doesn’t see this power as anything special, as he only wants to see his father again on the Island of the Astrals, Estalucia.
Life Link
Gran died fairly quickly at the hands of Pommern’s Hydra, and in order to save his life, Lyria bonded her life to his, allowing them to live together. Gran can sense where Lyria is at any given moment, and if separated, Gran’s life starts to fade out while Lyria simply feels pain.
fighting prowess
While Gran seems unassuming at first, his skill as a fighter is unmatched. It’s stated multiple times in canon that what he lacks in proper training, he makes up for in ferocity and sheer talent with a blade. He can perfectly wield any type of blade without fail, and has a fair bit of knowledge in staves and spears. Gran’s main weakness, however, are guns. For the life of him, he can never figure them out. (That last part is simply because I have no classes that support guns as main hands in my game lmao)

5 Questions:

Q1: You've been stranded on a desert island with only one standard-size travel suitcase. If you could only have 3 items in that suitcase, what would you want those items to be and why?

[ It takes Gran a moment or two to come up with a proper response to the question. He considers everything he'd need to make sure living was ideal. ] I would definitely bring a sword, for general survival, a piece of flint, for needed fire, and a sleeping bag, just so I don’t have to sleep while also getting dirty.

Q2: Tell us about a defining event in your life that you think influenced who you are today.

[ Again, it takes Gran a moment or two to actually respond to the question. But this time, his expression leans more into the unknown. ]

The only one that really continues to stick out in my mind is meeting Lyria. It was a chance encounter, finding her in that forest, but… without her, I think I would have been blind to everything... and never have learned to protect that I care for the most.

Q3: What does family mean to you and who do you consider a part of your family?

[ This question was almost immediately answered. ] Lyria, Vyrn, and the entire Grandcypher crew is my family! They’re the people who have gone through everything with me, who I know I can depend on if the situation calls for it.

Q4: Tell me about a time you were involved in a personal conflict (not a physical fight). What would you do differently to resolve it?

[ His face contorts into pain. This question was hard— and yet he knew the answer. ]

I suppose it would have to be being forced to learn about the truth of my birth. About how my parents left me on Zinkenstill. I watched everyone around me grow up without family. A part of me wishes I could have told everyone how I felt, how lonely it was to not have anyone to call ‘mom’ or ‘dad’… Of course, I wouldn’t ever want to change my current life, and yet…

[ He stops just to process the best way to phrase his next words. ] Sometimes, part of me wonders why I didn't push more for answers. I wanted more answers, wring everything out of the ones who told me for information. But I suppose finding out for myself is better, in the end.

Q5: Do you have any regrets? If so, what are the biggest ones? If not, what is something you wish you had gotten to do back home?

[ The quiet has returned, and Gran is back to thinking about how best to respond. There were a lot of regrets: the lack of power he holds at times, the inexperience… there was so much, and yet… ]

I wish we could’ve done more to save those in the Edgelands. No one should ever live down there, even if was meant to be a punishment, or an accident... Astral or not, no one deserves to live in that wasteland. They should be able to see the blue of the sky that I've learned to love so much.

Misc. Notes

I play Gran from the main game, so I’m kind of taking some major liberties with his character, and not what’s shown in the anime and subsequent media. But other than that, some major things: he will recognize main story characters and villains, and side story characters whose main plots affect the entire world he lives in: for example, he will openly recognize any Society member and the primarchs, but not anyone from Romeo and Juliet’s story and the Mysteria Friends canon. As for crossover canons, such as Tales of or Love Live, please speak to me first so we can work things out! If there’s anything that confuses you, please feel free to message me on plurk!
